14.3 Importance of Education

Education is the most important activity in a society to determine its future.

In planning for the future, however, it is not enough just to emphasize the importance of education. In the present system, much of our activities are governed by the profit motive. Profit pursuing activity is generally esteemed over others. This is, however, true only in principal rule that every activity is allowed only when it is controlled by a fundamental law of human being, that it is just for human being. In the mother land of this type of activity, modern western countries, the fundamental law or fundamental Premise has been clear and not necessary to mention as a sentence. Everything is controlled by a God. Every human activity served God and controlled by the culture controlled by His law.

Now in the world composed by various countries with different cultures, the Premise of the social activity left behind and the action principle, the principle of profit, is prevailing over the world. A culture having no inherent connection with the profit pursuing principle is going to lose its social basis and there remains monopoly of the principle of profit over the society. Education has to have its basis in the fundamental principle of the society and it is now subdued to the principle of profit in many developing countries including Japan. (Concept of the developing country should not be based only on the financial activity but on the cultural state of the country.)

The pursuit of man for better life supported by the principle of profit results in the present crisis of earth's environment for us. By common realization of the real state of the earth, we have to change our pattern of activity. In this process, the science will work as a rule of thought where object and subject dialogue to reach a new concept. Science will be a tool for a man to dialogue with nature. As mathematics is tool for science, science is tool for human behavior. Our purpose, probably, is survival of mankind and for this purpose we live in the environment on the earth with science as a tool. To live in the limited space on this earth, we have to control our earth society including human being itself. Such a knowledge common to every man, will be brewed in a mind of each man through education, or education should be such one which can brew common knowledge of exact state of our earth.
